American held during Iranian hostage crisis has died in Maine

(WABI) - One of the Americans held during the Iranian hostage crisis has died in Maine.

Moorhead Kennedy lived in Northeast Harbor.

According to his obituary published in the Bangor Daily News, Kennedy was born in New York in 1930.

He graduated from Princeton and entered the foreign service in 1960.

Over a 20-year career, he would work in multiple countries, and was named the first director of Office of Investment Affairs.

Kennedy was one of the 53 U.S. Embassy personnel to be taken hostage by Iranian militants in 1979

He was imprisoned for 444 days until his release in January of 1981.

Kennedy was 93 years old.
