A father is behind bars in Belmont County this week after his baby died of fentanyl exposure.

38-year-old Bellaire resident Cameron Cothran has been indicted by a grand jury on a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

He was already charged with child endangerment, drug possession, and evidence tampering.

He reportedly dropped the child off at the hospital covered in fentanyl and left.

Sheriff Dave Lucas says this is the third baby in the county this year exposed to the deadly substance, but this baby was the first to die.

“And he left the child and went some other places we don’t know at this time, before he eventually went back to the house. And that to me is inhumane. He is in jail and that’s where we want to keep him.”

They say the child’s mother is serving prison time in another part of Ohio.

(Story by 7News Anchor: Steven Moore)

Local officials held a blessing today for the Safe Haven Baby Box in Wheeling.

This box is located at Wheeling Fire Department Station #5 at 11 N Wabash (Wahh-Bash) Street and is one of only three in the entire state.

Under West Virginia’s Safe Haven law, anyone can anonymously surrender a baby at a fire station or hospital, but many people are uncomfortable doing that face to face.

The Baby Boxes are climate controlled and will alert the Wheeling Fire Department if a child is placed in one.
